Benjamin was born on May 1st, 1803 in Bolton and his christening took place on May 1st, 1803 in Deane.1  Benjamin's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Sarah Carter.  His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Welsbey. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, William, Joseph, George, John, George, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
