Roelof was born in 1863.  Roelof's father is Cornelis Johannes van Rooyen and his mother is Johanna Susanna Janse van Veeren. He has five brothers and six sisters, named Lukas, Daniel, Cornelis, Gert, Christoffel, Catarina, Geertruida, Johanna, Maria, Susarra and Martha.  He is the youngest of the twelve children.
