Christoffel was born on March 3rd, 1859.  Christoffel's father is Cornelis Johannes van Rooyen and his mother is Johanna Susanna Janse van Veeren. He has five brothers and six sisters, named Lukas, Daniel, Cornelis, Gert, Roelof, Catarina, Geertruida, Johanna, Maria, Susarra and Martha.  He is the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
