Thomas was born in 1848.  Thomas' father was George Usher and his mother is Caroline Gaisford.  His paternal grandfather was Thomas Usher and his paternal grandmother is Mary Wilshire. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Emily, Mary and Elizabeth.  He is the oldest of the five children.
