Louise was born on December 19th, 1897.  Louise's father was Samuel Jacobus Martens and her mother was Angenita Adendorff.  Her paternal grandparents were Cornelius (Basheesa) Jacobus Martens and Victoria Liversage. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Cornelius, Johan , Auwinus, Samuelina, Victor, Maria and Victoria.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
