Francois was born on December 20th, 1876.  Francois' father was Jacobus  Josua Francois Martens and his mother was Susanna Elizabeth Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hendrik, Jacobus, John, Wilhelmina, Margaretha, Frederika, Paulina, Maria, Susanna, Christina and Martina.  He is the sixth oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-sister, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender named Elisabeth and Anna.
