  • The “ART” of Rock and Roll

    The first time I heard “real” rock and roll was at Aunt Vicky’s. Art had a 45-rpm record player and one day he put on a 45 (that’s the little record with the big hole) for me of this artist whose name was Little Richard. The name of the record was Tutti Frutti. At this time black rock and roll was not getting any radio airtime, and I had never heard of Little Richard. It blew my mind! That was the wildest tune I had ever heard. I was hooked right then and there. Art also had 45’s of Bill Haley and the Comets, Fats Domino and others. No Pat Boon of Art! Art also had a DA (ducks ass) hairstyle; man he was cool!

    Yes" Little Richard ", he certinally did have all those records, and it might intrest you to know that one of his old girlfriends wound up with all of them, do you remember the red head the the fantastic body ,well perhaps you were too young? Her name was Lea, and I used to go out with her brother also a red head,my father hated him, but liked Art ,so the rest is history. I love all these memories!!!!!!

    OK, I'll try to give you a run down. Kevin and Mom and I left Friday at about 1pm. the trip was fine, not too much traffic, until we got to the 81 exit. We were only in line a few minutes but it was 95 and after we paid the tolls, the car died. Kevin pushed it to the side and we sat for a few minutes, hoping it was just hot and cranky. Thats all it was, it started right up. I figured if it didn't we would just sit there, sooner or later someone from the family would drive by. Mary and Steve were driving the new truck, and I asked Mom how she would like riding in the back ( remember"Summer Vacation")
    When we got to the cottage, Uncle Dick was already there, (we wanted to be the first) Art and Maryann had the screen tent and PortaPotty set up and enough Adirondac chairs to seat an army. The beer was in the frig in the shed--listen to how stupid I am-- every time I went to the frig to get some beer, I would open the frig door, look in see all kinds of things on top of the keg, not be able to figure how to pump the beer, and grap a can instead. It wasn't until the morning we were going home that I noticed the VERY LARGE ornate handle on the side of the frig with which you accessed the beer. When I told Kevin this on the way home, he just looked at me and wisely said nothing. 25 years of marriage teaches you something.
    Anyway over the next couple of hours the rest of the crew came in. We checked into the motel. It was nicer than we expected. Kevin Reitz called about 8 to ask for directions and tell us he was on his way. 140 miles and 6 hours later, he and Jackie found the motel. No easy task. Its damn dark out there, and the motel had no outside lights. The motel owner said they closed at 6, but would leave the key in the door for Kev.
    Friday night about 7 the sky got very dark and we moved inside to the front porch. we watched and incredible storm come down the lake. thunder, lightning. and rain so heavy you couldn't see the boat house. Maryann told us of a similar storm years ago. She was sitting reading during the storm when lightning hit next to the house, knocked her out of her chair flat on her face on the floor ( Maryann has steel rods in her back). Of course she is telling us the story sitting in the same chair during the storm.We asked her to move, we know she was trying to be a great hostess, but didn't feel she needed to be the entertainment.
    saturday dawned clear and beautiful, You couldn't have wanted a more beautiful day. Un cle Dick and Art went out on the boat early, about 6. We all got to the cottage about 8-9. I made breakfast on the grill, Jan brought wonderful special coffee and we spent the rest of the day just sitting and talking. The most bizzare thing that happened is that we found out that Art has always believed Grampa came from Rome. The man didn't know he has Sicilian!!! He says it would have changed his whole life. Too late now, but he was walking with a bit of a swagger by Sunday night I think I may have heard a few " forget about it's" as well.
    Thats all for now. I'll lease the rest for Nan or others to fill in. Needless to say it was a great time.
