Carolina was born on August 8th, 1826 in Lummen.  Carolina's father was Pierre Jean Steegmans and her mother was Anne Elisabeth Claes.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named Pierre Jean, Ludovicus, Theresia and Anna Catherina.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
