Gary's father was Joseph Howard Gaethofs and his mother was Margaret M. McCoy. His paternal grandparents were Joseph A Gaethofs and Lena M La Plume; his maternal grandparents were Walter R McCoy and Margaret M. Dahoney. He had a brother and two sisters, named Joseph, Barbara and Patricia. He is the youngest of the four children.
