Casimir was born on March 20th, 1840 in Pael.¹ Casimir's father was Josephus Gaethofs and his mother was Anna Christina Van Eerdewegh. His paternal grandparents were Petrus Franciscus Gaethofs and Catharina Elizabeth Theunis; his maternal grandparents were Jan Vaneerdeweg and Catharina Vrancken. He had a brother and five sisters, named Carolus Charles, Clara, Rosalia, Atalia, Maria Theresia and Thérèse.
