Barbara's father was Joseph Howard Gaethofs and her mother was Margaret M. McCoy. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph A Gaethofs and Lena M La Plume; her maternal grandparents were Walter R McCoy and Margaret M. Dahoney. She had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Gary and Patricia. She is the second oldest of the four children.
