Made a fortune from plastics
Fairbrother is an established Ambridge name, so most locals will know the name. Anyone who lived in the village in 1950s will remember the Fairbrothers.
Squire Lawson-Hope was the principal landowner in the Ambridge area when The Archers started in 1951.
The Lawson-Hopes sold up in 1954. The estate was broken up. However the bulk was spilt between two purchasers: George Fairbrother and the Bellamy family – father and son.
George was a widower with one daughter - Grace. He remarried in 1952 to Helen Carey. They had one son - Robin Edward (Grace’s half-brother), born in 1953. Robin is Rex and Toby's father.
In 1959 George Fairbrother sold his land to Charles Grenville. He, Helen and Robin left the village. At some point Helen spent some time in Kenya.

Rex
Fairbrother
Rex is a former professional Rugby player, looking to turn his hand to farming in partnership with his brother Toby. He gave up the rugby after sustaining an injury, but maintains a strong work ethic and determination to succeed.

Capable both on the rugby pitch and the cricket field
Like his older brother Rex, Toby is sporty - capable both on the rugby pitch and the cricket field.
Before coming to Ambridge, he worked in the City for a while (well, he says he did).
While Toby is never short of ideas, he lacks the commitment to get through the daily grind required to turn a business plan into a money-making reality.
This ultimately led to the break-up of his and Rex's partnership in raising geese and producing pastured eggs. Plus, there was the animosity caused Toby became romantically involved with Pip while Rex was away, even though he was well aware of Rex's feelings for Pip. Ouch.
