    Source: Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, MA, by David Hoyt, page 162. Philip was a clothworker, came in the ship Mary and John. Resided in Ipswich, MA. The name Fowler dates back to the Norman era in England. There was a Richard Fowler of Foxley who served Richard the Lion Hearted inn the crusades. At the siege of Acre in 1191 he was knighted for the work he and his bowmen did in repelling a surprise attack by the Muslims. Richard Fowler later returned to England and lived in Buckinghamshire. Many English Fowlers are descended from his line, but it is not known if the Philip Fowler of this study is. Philip Fowler was probably born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England about 1594. It is unknown as to what Philip's trade was in England, but it may well have been a clothmaker. Family tradition has the early Norman Fowlers being clothmakers, and in a 1668 "deed of gift" Philip Fowler describes himself as being a "clothmaker". In Mass. He was also a surveyor and a farmer . Philip married Mary Winsley (or Winslow) in England. She was the sister of Samuel Winsley , a resident of Colchester and later an early settler of Salisbury." Philip and Mary had the following children; Margaret Osgood (bapt 1615-), Mary Chandler, Samuel (1618-), Hester Collins, Joseph (abt 1629-), and Thomas (1636-). The family came to America on the "Mary and John" in May of 1634. This ship was out of London and its master was Robert Sayres. The Mary and John was set to sail in Feb. of 1633 when the authorities prevented the ships departure. They were not allowed to proceed until the ships master put up a 100 pound bond, and promised that the ship would hold daily 'Church of England' services which would be attended by all of the passengers. In addition, all of the passengers were required to take the "Oathes of Allegience and Supremacies" on March 24, 1633. The ship was then allowed to sail and it arrived in New England in May of 1633. Also on the "Mary and John" was Christopher Osgood who married Philip's daughter, Margaret. Philip settled in Ipswich where he received several grants of land. He was also granted in 1634, 4 acres of meadow and marshland. In 1635, he was granted 35 acres lying on the northwest side of the Muddy River, 10 acres in Jeffries neck (adjoining Richard Hassall's land), 6 acres of planting ground on the "hill north side of the town" (adjoining Christopher Osgood's l and), a 1 acre home lot on Meeting House Lane, 10 acres of upland, and 6 acres of meadow near Jeffries Neck. The home lot was next to the home lots of John Gage and Thomas Scott. In 1660 he received another grant which consisted of 5 acres of marshland. "In 1672-3 (2 Jan.) he sells for 100 pounds, to "Roger Darby, sope boyler," of same town, his "dwelling house and ground about it with a hous e thereon, and orchyards, yards & gardens, in all containe two acres, be it more or less, wit h the comonage, and all and every, . . . which sayd house & land is scittuate & lyeing in Ips wich, aforesayd, on the same syde of the streete, comonly called Hill street, bounded or lyei ng on the west syde of Thomas Lovell's pasture land, and on the north syde of Samuell Graves , his pasture, and on the east syde of John Browne's house lott, together with four acres o f land, out ofmy lott at Muddy River, on the Northwest syde of Richard Shatswell's pasture. Subscribed, sealed & dl in the presents of us, WILLIAM NORTON. PHILLIP FOWLER ANDREW PEETERS. (and a seale)." Philip took the Freemen's oath on September 3, 1634. Philip served Ipswich in a number of way s. He was on a Jury of Trials in 1642 and 1647, a Judge of Defaults in 1646, a Surveyor and S urveyor of fences for a number of years. He also helped build the town watch-house in 1647-4 8 and a wharf for the town's use in 1656. In 1658 he was appointed to a committee which was t o "give their apprehensions and reasons (to the selectmen) who have a right to Commonage, and w ho not, and what else they conceive may conduce to the good of the town, and when they are re ady, the selectmen to call the town together, to hear what they conceive". Philip Fowler was in court on a number of other occasions. On November 25, 1648, he testifie d in regards to the land of Humphrey Broadstreete. This may have had a connection with his du ties as a surveyor. He was also in court on November 22, 1660 where; " the Court issued a writ against "PHILIP FOWLER, and MARY his wife, executrix to the estat e of hir late Husband, George Norton, . . . for pounds 30, on complaint of Mr. William Norton , aturney to Mr. Emanuel Downing." The case was continued 23 Nov., 1665, when a case was mad e by PHILLIP FOWLER, and MARY his wife, as plaintiff, against Roger Preston, defendant, in a n action of debt of pounds 18, due for rent, and damages, according to attachment, dated 13th , 9th mo., 1665. The jury found for the plaintiff, pounds 19 damages, and 24s. 8d., cost, 28t h, 9th mo., 1665. Robert Lord his atorney, acknowledged a judgment of 18s. 2d., due to Mr. Wi lliam Norton, 28th, 9th mo., 1665. It seems that 4 Aug., 1656, Lucie Downing of Salem, with c onsent of her husband Emanuell Downing, let and farmed, unto George Norton, sometime of Salem , carpenter, her farm called Groton, in Salem, near to Gov. Endicott's for the term of ten ye ars, from 1 March, 1655-6, for o18 per annum. 14 March, 1658-9, an agreement was made betwee n George Norton and Roger Preston, for the lease "of the farme the said Norton now dwelleth o n," he to enter 15 March, 1659-60. Witness Joseph Fowler. " In 1661 Philip also gave testimony in court regarding a defect in the highway, possibly Hig h St. where he lived. On May 11, 1663 an agreement was made in court, "by which PHILIP FOWLER, Senior, delivered to Philip Bill of "Jubaque," "two young heifers, w ith him to abide and continue for the terme of seven years" etc. It appears that Philip Bill , "had gone out of this jurisdiction," and PHILIP FOWLER, Senior, entered a suit against him , 3 Nov., 1668, in the case for security for a parcel of cattle, value o20, and at the same t ime appoints his grandchild "Phillip Fowler, to be his true and lawful atturney," when he sig ns "the marke P of PHILLIP FFOWLER" (and a green seal), and acknowledged it, the same date. A ccordingly he 5 Nov., 1668, "Attached 3 cowes & 2 heiferes, & put into the hands James Bill , to be responsible, according to the tenour of the attachment, Pr. me Phillip Fowler, Marsha l deputy." The case was found for PHILIP FOWLER, senior, 24th, 9th mo., 1668. " Mary Winsley died on August 30, 1659. Philip remained a widow until 1659 when he became engag ed to a widow, Mary Norton. The marriage contract reads as follows; "Know all men by these presents, that I, PHILLIP FOWLER of Ipswich, in the county of Essex, c lothworker, for & in consideration of a contract of marriage with MARY NORTON, widdow, doe gr ant unto her as followeth, viz: that if it please the Lord the mariage intended be compleated , and she the sayd Mary my intended wife do survive, I doe covenant & grant unto her, that sh e shall injoye all my house and lands, with the appurtenances & privilidges thereunto belongi ng, untill my sonn Phillip (provided I make him my heir), shall come of age, and when he come s of age, I do grant unto her, that she shall possess and enjoy the chamber over the hall, wi th the table forme & cabbin beds, as alsoe the garretts & halfe the orchyard, and halfe the g rasse of the close, & my six acres of land upon the hill, and the inward cellar to her owne p roper use & behoofe, and alsoe liberty to make use of the lower roome for her necessary ocasi ons, with free liberty to make use of the well in the cellar to fetch watter, & all these t o enjoye during the tyme of her naturall life, and then to return unto my children, or who o f them, I shall dispose them unto, and further doe grant her liberty of barne roome to lay i n her corne, and two load of hay, with roome in the cowe house for to sett two cowes, & grass e for to make two loads of hay a yeare, for the tyme of her life, as aforesayd. In wittness w hereof, I have hereunto sett my hand & seale, the 27th of February, 1659. Signed, sealed and delivered, in the presence of us, WILLIAM NORTON. He and Mary lived on High Street (Ipswich), on the south side, adjoining the house lots of Jo hn Woodam and Philip Call. In 1668 his grandchild Philip agreed to take care of him in his old age. In exchange Philip f iled the following deed of gift with the Clerk of Courts; This present writing wittnesseth that I, Philip FFowler of Ipswich, in the county of Essex, c lothworker, for and in considderation of that naturall affection I doe beare unto my Grandchi ld Philip FFowler, as also in consideration of his being with me, and doeing my business fo r me, as formerly, I doe by these presents freely give and grant, and by these fully confirme , unto him the sayd Phillip, my Grandchild, all that my now dwelling house and lands I stan d now possesst off, after my decease (exepting what by agreement with my wife upon mariage, w ch is put in writing and recorded), for him, the sayd Phillip, my Grandchild, Imediatly afte r my decease. To have & to hould, and quietly and peaceably to enjoy, unto him & his heire s & assignes forever, all that my sayd houses and lands, with all and every, the apptenance s & prevaledges, thereunto belonging, exsept as`aforesayd, what is`granted to my wife, durein g her naturall life, and after her decease, the whole to be and remaine unto him the sayd Phi llip, my Grandchild, his heires and assignes, for ever, provided still, that if by the provid ence of God, I shall be forct for nesasary subsitance to sell any pt. thereof, wch in such ca se I reserve liberty to doe, provided, if he the sayd Phillip, dye without issue, then to ret urne unto his Brother Joseph, & if Joseph dye without isue, then to be & remaine his brothe r John, provided alwayes, that if my Grandchild Phillip, leaves a wife behind him when he dye , then she shall enjoy it durering her naturall life, & then to be & returne, as above expres t. In witnes whereof, I the sayd Phillip Ffowler, have sett to my hand and seale, dated the 2 3 of December, Anno Dom. 1668. Signed Sealed & dl in the presence of us, Richard Kimball (the marke of) Phillip P Ffowler John Severance Robert Lord Philip died on June 24, 1679. His wife Mary died sometime prior to Nov. 5, 1694. Philip died intestate. He left very little as he had previously disposed of his property. In court held Ipswich, 30, (7), 1679. A s attest Robert Lord, cler." Philips son Samuel was born in England and came over with his parents. He was a shipwright. H e may have working in Portsmouth, NH when he married for the first time. The name of his wif e is unknown, but the children were; William, Mary Goodwin, Sarah, and Samuel (1663-1737) wh o married Hannah Worthen. In 1668, Samuel moved to Salisbury where he worked as a shipwright and worked a 10 acre plo t he bought from Robert Ring. In 1669 he purchased additional land in Salisbury, and in 167 3 he buys 30 acres of land in Amesbury, from Joseph Peaslee. Samuel's first wife died sometime before 1673. He took as his second wife, Margaret Norman, t he widow of Robert Morgan. In 1684 (3 Dec.), he gives by deed of gift to his son Samuel Fowler, if he marry Ezekiel Wath en's daughter Hannah, half of lot of upland where he now dwells, about 12 acres, with 6 oxe n and 2 cowes, cart, etc., which he ack. same date. Another deed of gift was given to Samuel Jr. on Feb. 20, 1693/4. This deed states that; for & in Consideration of That Care, Trouble & Expence, which my Son Samuel Ffowler, Junr, of ye Towne of Salisbury, abovesd, labourer, hath already bestowed, layed Out and Expended, as also of what he must doe for ye future, in order unto ye maintenance of & attendance upon my Selfe & Margarett my now wife, after her returne from Beverly, ye place of her present Sojourning: to my present habitation, or to such other as may be provided by or for me for her entertainment, to Settle & abide in ye Time of Our old age, & under our present want of sigh t & decay of other Members & lawfull Considerations, .... have given... unto my son Samuel Fowler, all my estate real and personal, as a deed of gift. Samuel Sr. died in January, 1710/11, in the town of Salisbury. Samuel Fowler Jr. was born in 1663. He married Hannah Worthen on December 5, 1684. Their chil dren were; Samuel (1685-aft 1727), Hannah Hackett (1687-1720), Susanna Jones (1689-aft 1727) , Jacob (1690-1752), Mary Chase (1692-aft 1727), Sarah Tucker (1693/4-aft 1727), Ann Goodal e (1696-1740), Ezekiel (1698-1735), Robert (1699-1733), Abraham (1701-aft 1727), Thomas (1703 -1792), Lydia Norton (1705-aft 1727), and Judith Collins (1712-aft 1727). Susannah married John Jones on May 29, 1711, in Amesbury, Mass. Susannah's brother Jacob, ma rried John Jones' sister, Mary, on May 3, 1716.
