  • "Ralph was born in England about 1613, probably the son of Ralph Keeler, yeoman, who was living in Lawford, County Essex, in 1600. A search of the Great Index there in 1950 by John Holmes of the Essex Record Office turned up references to nearly 20 Keelers in the Lawford area between 1578 and 1600.
    
    Ralph came to America before February 1639, when his name appears in the Hartford, CT, town records (I:1:30) as owner of several parcels of land (Trumbull's Memorial History of Hartford, p. 42). He was granted a lot by courtesy of the town (ibid, p. 248), signifying that he was not one of the original proprietors. His home lot was located in what is now the West Park, just north of the present site of the Capitol (ibid, p. 248). Trumbull says he was a chimney viewer in 1645.
    
    Ralph's name appears in the record of "The perticular Courte in Hartford this first of March, 1648" with five entries in reference to an "action of slaunder" brough against him by John Webb, who sought 10 pounds in damages. Ralph was ordered to pay 4 shillings and court costs (Connecticut Colony Records, I:176). A year earlier, 2 Mar. 1647, there was this entry: "Nicholas Gynings, for a miscaridge, beateing of a Cow of Ralfe Keelers." (ibid, I:160)
    
    It is not certain just when Ralph moved from Hartford to Norwalk, but he was one of the original proprietors and Trumbull says he was there in 1652. His name appears in the agreement of 19 June 1650 between teh new proprietors and Roger Ludlow of Fairfield, who had purchased the land from the Indians in 1640. Connecticut Place Names says Norwalk was settled in 1649 and incorporated in 1651. Hall's Norwalk (p. 14) cites the deed from Runckinheage 15 Feb. 1651 as evidence that the "planters" were in Norwalk then and says "some of them at least, were probably here the year before." Hall says the first record of town proceedings is under the date of 1653."
