Jurgis was born in 1897.  Jurgis' father was Vincentas Šimanskis and his mother was Agnieška Januškaitė.  His paternal grandparents were Simonas Šimanskis and Kotryna Šimkevičiūtė. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Aleksandras, Kazimieras, Kazimieras, Ona, Marijona, Marijona  and Pranciška.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
