Lydia
Robson

74
Birth registered Q2 1878. Shown on 1901 Census with parents, but no trace of Lydia or Charles William Woods after marriage - emigrated? Very possibly: a Charles Wm Woods left London for Adelaide on the SS Ormuz (Orient Line) on 29 April 1910 with his wife, daughter and baby girl. This Charles Woods was a farmer, so the marriage certificate would show if it was the right person. (Six other farmers are listed on the same page of the departure list, so they were probably answering an appeal for people to populate the growing areas of South Australia.) There is also no record of the daughter, Mary Christiana Woods in the 1911 Census, nor any record of her early death, which further supports the emigration possibility. Married Q1 1906 and a baby Charles William is recorded as being born in Hartlepool in Q4 1906, so almost certainly the son of Lydia. However, there is no death record on any source, and no record in the 1911 Census; probably died as an infant and not recorded. The identity of the baby girl is impossible to establish as well - of the two Woods babies born in Hartlepool in 1909-10, one died within months and the other appears on the 1911 Census. The baby could have been born elsewhere shortly before they departed from London, but without the MMN (not recorded before 1911) will be almost impossible to trace. UPDATE: Marriage Certificate shows her address as 12 Burbank Terrace in March 1906. Witnesses were Herman Schmitz (surgeon, living in Victoria Road - now Grange Road, West Hartlepool) and E??? Aspland Living in Burbank Street, West Hartlepool in 1906, at time of her son's Christening, and at 10 Belmont Gardens in June 1908 when her daughter was Christened. Family found in NSW, Australia from around 1913 onwards (Antony George was born in Waverley in March 1913), so farming in SA obviously did not suit them. Living at 33 Fifth Street, Canterbury, Sydney in 1930, then at 67 Holden Street, Ashfield, Sydney shortly afterwards. Listed at 30 Jones Street, Pyrmont, Sydney in the 1933, 1936 and 1937 electorall rolls, and at 147 Victoria Street, Ashfield in 1943 and 1949. Moved to "Aston Clinton", Dunmore Avenue, Leura (now Katoomba) in 1949, where Lydia died in 1952.

Charles William
(Henry)
Woods
Something of a mystery person: born in South Africa, there are no obvious records of him prior to his marriage, and no death record either, although he is listed several times in Australian records. 1901 Census shows a Henry Woods of the right age and occupation living at 20 St Paul's Road, so was this a twin or the same person? The 1911 Census indicates that his parents had five children, of which only four can be identified (unless "Henry" was the fifth - in which case, what happened to him after 1901?). "Henry" Woods is shown on the 1901 Census as an "apprentice marine engineer", aged 18, indicating that the family had probably returned to England by 1897/98, as it is unlikely that such an apprenticeship would have been started after the age of 15. (The Ward's and Kelly's Directories of the town for the1895 - 1900 period may shed light on the actual year of return, although one wonders why West Hartlepool should have been chosen as their living place when they had absolutely no connection with the town beforehand: maybe they had just heard of its reputation as a "boom town"?). Was "Henry" his mother's pet-name for him? Note that his own son was named only Charles William. Marriage Certificate states that he was 23 (three years younger than Lydia), and was living at 20 St Paul's Road, West Hartlepool, with Lydia living in Burbank Terrace, West Hartlepool. His father was given as Henry Woods (deceased), a master civil engineer. Living in Burbank Street, West Hartlepool in 1906, when he was shown as an "Engineer" in his son's Christening record, and at 10 Belmont Gardens in June 1908 when his daughter was Christened, when he was then descibed as a "Marine Engineer". Emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1910 under the guise of being a farmer - a common tactic, apparently, in order to secure an assisted passage. Once there, the family moved to the Sydney area of New South Wales, where Antony George was born in 1913, and resumed his occupation as an engineer (as shown by the electoral rolls). Living at 33 Fifth Street, Canterbury, Sydney in 1930, then at 67 Holden Street, Ashfield, Sydney shortly afterwards. Listed at 30 Jones Street, Pyrmont, Sydney in the 1933, 1936 and 1937 electoral rolls, and at 147 Victoria Street, Ashfield in 1943 and 1949. Moved to "Aston Clinton", Dunmore Avenue, Leura (now Katoomba) in 1949. Moved to "Glenariff", Gladstone Street, Leura after his wife's death in 1952, and is shown there in the electoral rolls for 1953 and 1958, living with his daughter Mary Christiana, after which there are no more records of him. Possibly went back to South Africa? (Note that his sister Muriel's children lived at "Glenariff", Senlac Road, Lee, SE12 when they returned to England from Egypt in Sept 1932, so the name obviously had significance to both CW and Muriel - from their South African upbringing?)

1841 Census shows her in Henry Street, Hartlepool as a widow, of independent means, with six children who were all born in Sunderland. Also in the house were three Sarah Towells - her daughter, granddaughter and daughter-in-law. 1851 Census shows her as a "small grocer", living at 1 George Street, Hartlepool, with only Isabella and George remaining at home. 1861 Census shows her still living at George Street (number ??) with George, his wife Christiana, and granddaughter Emily. 1871 Census shows her living alone at 29 George Street, aged 77. NBI shows her death and burial in April 1875 (in St Hilda's churchyard).

May have been Sarah "Towell", as Towell appears to be a Devonian name (daughter Charlotte was born there), and a flowery "T" in the parish register could easily be mis-transcribed as a "P". It is also very strange (or extremely coincidental) that two of her granddaughters married "Towells" in 1839 in Hartlepool! Apparently living in Stoke Damerel (now Devonport, Plymouth) when first child Charlotte was born in 1785, then moved to Sunderland before 1790.

Married in Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland. Transcript of marriage (No 153 in church register) gives no personal details. (See p1215 of 1412, Sunderland 1769-1842 on familysearch website). DoB probably 24 Oct 1792 (IGI), and parents = William Robson and Sarah Dawson. First child then named after both grandmothers (Sarah), not mother (Dorothy). There is also a possibility that he was the William born 08 Nov 1793, parents = William and Mary (nee Robson!), so a look at the original registers is probably a necessity to see if there are other clues available. Died in Hartlepool in Aug 1838 - St. Hilda's has burial record of a Wm Robson from Sunderland, aged 45, on 22 Aug 1838, which is a good fit with other facts. Living in South Terrace at the time. Age and date of death put DoB between Aug 1792 and Aug 1793, confirming Sarah Dawson as his most likely mother. Marriage records of children (between 1839 and 1859) state that he was a sailor or mariner, later a master mariner, but do not state that he was deceased (although he was certainly dead by the time of the 1841 Census, according to his wife). As the later marriages were around twenty years after his death, the "Master" Mariner description may well be an embellishment of the truth.

Living in Salt House Lane, St Peter at Gowts (High Street), Lincoln at time of 1841 Census, when aged 2 or 3, but then no trace until 1871. Obviously living in Hartlepool in 1851, as was her family, but probably in service and unrecorded. (Sister Lydia was shown as a servant in the McDougle house in 1861, aged 12 or 13.) 1871 Census says born at Willingham, Newark, but should be Collingham, Newark? FMP BMD shows birth registered Q3 1837 in Newark. Living at 11 William Street, Hartlepool on 1871 and 28 William Street on 1881 Census. Living with daughter Mary Ann and Thomas Hugill at 47 Thornville Road, West Hartlepool at time of 1911 Census (as was her nephew, William Wilson). Probably Mary Boreham, born in Hampton (reg. in Kingston), Surrey in 1851. Shown as 1 mth old in 1851 Census, so most likely born late Feb/early March. Born and living at Windmill House, Windmill Road, Hampton at time of 1851 Census. Living at Thorpe Mill, Thorpe, (near Chertsey) Surrey at time of 1861 Census. Note that the person living next door was a Thomas Woods, born about 1797; it's possible that he and William Henry's father were related, and that William Henry and Mary thus knew each other for many years before they married in 1872. The 1861 Census GRO nos. for the two were RG9/791 and RG9/758, so they were also geographically very close together at the time. Living at 20 St Paul's Road, West Hartlepool at time of 1901 Census. Living at Friar's Croft, Goathland at time of 1911 Census (apparently having just moved there, as the address she originally gave on the census form was Thorpe Lee, West Hartlepool - this was then crossed out and replaced by the Goathland address; Thorpe Lee was most probably her old house name, derived from the place she lived as a child in 1861). Goathland was probably a short-term residence, as the family must have pretty soon moved on to Lewisham - this being where her daughter Muriel married in 1914 and Mary herself died in Q3 1920, aged 69. (NB all the census records, BMD records, dates, locations and other information tie together so well that Mary Boreham just has to be the correct wife of William Henry Woods, even without the proof offered by daughter Ethel Mary's birth certificate!)
