Robert, known as The Competitor, was born in 1210 in Annandale, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. The Competitor's father was Sir Robert “The Noble” de Brus 4th Lord of Annandale and his mother was Lady Isabella mar Crinan de Huntingdon.  His paternal grandparents were Sir William “"The Lion"” de Brus 3rd Lord of Annandale and Beatrice de Teyden; his maternal grandparents were David of Scotland 9th Earl of Huntingdon and Matilda (Maud) De Meschines of Chester.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 85 on March 31st, 1295 in Loch Maben Castle, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.
