George was born in 1845 in North Walsham, Swanton, Norfolk, England. George's father was George Girdlestone and his mother was Mary Ann Doughty. His paternal grandparents were William James Girdlestone and Martha Humphries. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named William, Matthew, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Martha, Mary Ann, Sarah, Charlotte Catherine, Eliza and Rebecca. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.-
