Mary was born in February 1648 in Hadley, Shropshire and her baptism took place on March 1st, 1648 in Christ Church, Wellington, Shropshire. Mary's father was John Cookson and her mother was Jane Pekah.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthew Cookson and Catherine Unknown. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Matthewe, William, William, Edward, Humphrey, Jane, Margaret, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
