John was born in July 1675 in Hadley, Shropshire and his baptism took place on August 6th, 1675.  John's father was William Cookson and his mother was Elizabeth Whitfield.  His paternal grandparents were John Cookson and Jane Pekah; his maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Margaret Unknown. He had four brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Henry, William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, Sarah and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 74 on August 28th, 1749 in London.  He was buried in St Matthias, Poplar, London.
