James was born in April 1784 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.  James' father was William (Chancellour) Chancellor and his mother was Betty Lane.  His paternal grandparents were Unknown and Jane (Chancellour) Chancellor. He had two brothers named James and James.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William, Ann and Avis.
