Mathew was born on October 13th, 1776 in Houghton Le Spring, County Durham, England. Mathew's father was John Bowden and his mother was Elisabeth Bee.  His maternal grandparents were John Bee and Unknown. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Ann, Isabella, Mary and Elisabeth.  He died at the age of 38 on October 23rd, 1814 in Hobart, Van Diemans Land, Tasmania, Australia.
