Sophia was born on April 18th, 1745 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland.  Sophia's father was William Beath (of Pitgorne) and her mother was Mary Orrock.  Her paternal grandparents were William Beath and Katherine Storer; her maternal grandparents were John Or James? Orrock and Mary Crawford. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, John, Marjorie, Katharine, Jean and Kathleen.  She was the youngest of the eight children. She had seven half-brothers named David, George, Robert, William, George, George and David.
