Jannett was born on October 14th, 1709 in Kennoway, Fifeshire, Scotland. Jannett's father was David Beath and his mother was Elizabeth Black.  His paternal grandparents were William Beath and Jean Russal; his maternal grandparents were Robert Black and Unknown. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, John, William, Andrew, David, Jean, Euphan and Agnes.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
