Her paternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Durie and Jean Jamison. William Beath (of Pitgorne) and Marion Ireland were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had six brothers and a sister, named Andrew, Thomas, David, Alexander, Robert, John and Anne.-
