Isabell was born about 1672 in Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.  Isabell's father was John Barrowman and her mother was Janet Gray.  Her maternal grandparents were Abraham (Abraham Gray The Elder) Gray and Elspet Huntar. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Abraham, James, William, Thomas, Janet, Elizabeth, Margaret and Katherin.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
