John was born on June 11th, 1841 in Portmoak, Kinnesswood, Kinrosshire, Scotland.  John's father was John ARNOT and his mother was Janet SYME.  His paternal grandparents were Robert ARNOT and Margaret HENDERSON; his maternal grandparents were John SYME and Janet ARNOT.  He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William, George Henderson, James Syme, Janet, Margaret, Elizabeth Ann and Helen.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
