In 1851 the housing here was mainly on Broomside Lane and on Cross Row (now known as Bainbridge Street) At that time most of the housing was on the north side of Broomside Lane but by 1891 the terrace on the south side which now runs from Cheveley House to the Leamside Line railway bridge had been added. About 150 miners lived in the Broomside Lane area in the 1850’s and, while the number did reduce towards the end of the century, the reduction was not as significant as it was in other areas.
