Ellen was born in 1873 in Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.1  Ellen's father was James Henry TRANTER and her mother was Ann FAIRBROTHER.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel TRANTER and Amelia NICHOLS. She had three brothers and a sister, named Albert, Henry, Peter and Ada.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
