Mary's father was James Thomas Philpot and her mother was Matilda Anne Bouch. Her paternal grandparents were James Philpot and Agnes Dewhurst; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Bouch and Mary Gallagher. She had a brother and four sisters, named James, Maude, Agnes, Doll and Matilda. She had a half-brother and four half-sisters, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named Bill, Eva, Jean, Hazel, Tas and ?.-
