Ruth was born in 1774 in Abbey. Ruth's father was Jonathon Bouch and her mother was Mary Forbes. Her paternal grandparents were John Bouch and Ruth Miller. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Jonathon, Mary and Jane. She was the second oldest of the six children.-
