Thomas was born in 1817.  Thomas' father was Hugh Bolton and his mother was Martha.  His paternal grandfather was Samuel Bolton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Archey, Hugh, John, Graham, Margaret and Ezabella.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
