Mathew was born in 1731. Mathew's father was Dr. Hugh Bolton and his mother was Elizabeth Patterson. His paternal grandfather was Thomas Bolton and his paternal grandmother is Agnes. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Hugh, John and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the five children.
