John was born in 1740.  John's father was Dr. Hugh Bolton and his mother was Elizabeth Patterson.  His paternal grandfather was Thomas Bolton and his paternal grandmother is Agnes. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Mathew, Hugh and Agnes.  He was the youngest of the five children.
