Hugh was born in 1738. Hugh's father was Dr. Hugh Bolton and his mother was Elizabeth Patterson. His paternal grandfather was Thomas Bolton and his paternal grandmother is Agnes. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Mathew, John and Agnes. He was the second youngest of the five children.
