John was born in 1318.  John's father was Robert de Holland and his mother was Maud De La Zouche.  His paternal grandparents were Sir Robert de Holland and Elizabeth de Samlesbury. He had four brothers and eight sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Otho, Alan, Joane, Margery, Maud, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jane, Eleanor and Elizabeth.  He was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children.
