William was born in 1854.  William's father was James  Bishop and his mother was Jane Goodhew.  His paternal grandparents were James Bishop and Sarah. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Frederick , Charles, George, Sarah and Emily.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
