George's father was James William Shaver and his mother is Lea Anna Ivey (Shaver). His maternal grandparents were George Washington Ivey and Nancy Pink Davis (Ivey). He had a brother and eight sisters, named William, Maggie, Ada, Mary, Lola, Ruthey, Bessy, Jessie and Ruby.
