James was born in 1909.  James' father is Alexander Carswell and his mother was Sara McCaughan.  His maternal grandfather was Samuel McCaughan and his maternal grandmother is Matilda Kirkpatrick. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, William, Robert, Fredrick, Margaret, Florence and Muriel.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died in 1909.
