      Article Text:

BERKELEY - Two Lakehurst men were rescued by a Coast Guard crew yesterday after their small boat began sinking in the Barnegat Bay.

Frank Castoral, 36, and Dave Schetlick, 39, were aboard Castoral's 17-foot boat, the Can Man II, about 100 feet off of Sloop Creek Road, when they began taking on water at about 3:15 p.m., Castoral said.

The engine made a loud noise and suddenly the boat was sinking, he said.

They were able to alert authorities by radio, and waited about 20 minutes before a boat from the Coast Guard's Barnegat Light Station reached them, Castoral said.

Schetlick was pulled on board a row boat by a nearby boater, but Castoral remained in the 40 degree water.

Coast Guard Seaman Jeff Ruch and Petty Officers Tim Cutler and Ron Mercready brought both men to shore at the Sloop Creek Marina, where they had launched the boat.

Castoral was treated at the scene by the Bayville First Aid Squad for some numbness in his hands and feet.

The Bayville Fire Company, Station No. 17 and the Berkeley Township Underwater Search and Rescue Team also responded.
