The Lowrys lived in the parish of Taughboyne, Co. Donegal.  Early Abercorn land records[1744-   ] and local church records show them living in the townlands of Drumcrow, Feddyglass, Drumfad, Binnion, Drummucklagh, Tullyrap, Woodland and Coolaghy.  Many were probably related.   A letter dated Jan 19, 1766 from Joshua Nisbitt to the Earl of Abercorn states what we have come to believe:

" Andrew Lowry is still in possession and if he was out it would be unsafe for a stranger to go there; the Bishop of Raphoe has scarcely been able to protect himself or his family in that neighbourhood and  there is such a connection in that part of your Lordship's estate for they are all Lowrys or related to Lowrys that unless the chain is somehow or other broke there will be no living there for a stranger that will come into any of their farms."


Stevenson, Colhoun, and Rogers are other names connected with my Lowry line beginning in Drumcrow in the 1600's.  Alexander Lowry, born about 1789, married Sarah Stevenson.  He appears to have been a younger son of Andrew Lowry and Margaret Rogers and, therefore, did not inherit the 129 plantation acres of Drumcrow but worked there and in other townlands as a labourer.  Several of his children emigrated to America, a couple stayed in Donegal and one may have returned to Donegal.

My great grandfather, James Stewart, was born in Killymuck Glebe, Tamlaght O'Crilly Pa., Co Londonderry Ireland to John Stewart and Mary McCaughrin <sic>.  Mary McCaughrin's mother was Nancy Stewart of Gorton Coolhill, Aghadowey Pa., Co. Londonderry, Ireland.  Because of having three Stewart lines and intermarriages I have " branched out"  in my research to include many of the Stewarts of the Bann Valley. McCaughrins,Craigs, Irwins, Cookes and Fultons are also connected with this family.  I have also been trying to connect Boltons to it as my grandfather was named James Bolton Stewart and his father was a "cousin" of the Revd. J. Gray Bolton. of Philadelphia, born in Lismoyle.
