William was born about 1822 in Killymuck Glebe, Tamlaght O'Crilly Parish, Co. Londonderry, Ireland.  William's father was Thomas Stewart and his mother was Maria Young.  His paternal grandparents were William Stewart and Ann; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Young and Mary Campbell.  He had four brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Thomas, James, Sarah and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the seven known children.
