His paternal grandparents were John Stewart and Sarah Craig; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Lowry and Sarah Stevenson. He had a brother and six sisters, named John, Sally, Martha, Infant, Margaret, Elizabeth and Lillian "Lillie". He was the second oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 58 in 1915.
