John was born on May 3rd, 1826 in Lismoyle, Tamlaght O'Crilly Pa., Co. Londonderry, Ireland and his baptism took place on June 3rd, 1826 in 1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church.1   John's father was John Stewart and his mother was Sarah "Sally" Boyd.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Sarah and Catherine.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
