John and Mary McCaughrin Stewart

• General Notes
  • Chronological notes from 1998-
    1. It has been identified through General Tenement Valuation, Co. Londonderry, Union of Ballymoney, 1858 that John STEWART(JAS) shared land with a Samuel STEWART.  They leased 25 acres 0 rood 20 perches valued at GBP 5.5.0  annually. 
    2. John Stewart's name was deleted from the Valuation book in 1867 to  Mary  WORKMAN but there is no record of a John Stewart dying about that time in the area.
    3.  John Stewart and Mary McCaughrin were married in 1st Garvagh Presbyterian Church.
    4. John STEWART's  father was identified as a James STEWART 1858 Tenement Valuation.
    5. He was ordained as an elder in the Churchtown Presbyterian Church on April 17, 1862.
    6. By 1901 only one Stewart family was living in Killymuck, the family of Thomas H. Stewart.
    7. It is believed that neither John nor his wife emigrated.
    8. A William (b. abt 1807) and a Robert  (b. abt 1805) may have been his older brothers.
    9. John and Mary McCaughrin Stewart were still alive in Aug 7, 1873 when James wrote to Robt. McCaughran, Esq. from Philadelphia about the estate of Samuel McCaughrin, Mary McCaughrin Stewart's brother..
    Family history says that Robert Torrens Stewart returned to Ireland because his parents needed him and indeed he is in Killygullib in 1886 (GVRB) on his father's property and by 1901 Census has married Isabella Cooke of Dullaghy (1888].
    
    When Rev. William Lindsay ( a nephew of James Stewart of Phila.) visited Belfast and No. Ireland in 1908 he preached in the church where John Stewart had been an elder  (Churchtown Presbyterian Church, Tamlaght O'Crilly Parish) and visited with Robert Stewart's family in Killygullib at that time.
    It appears John Stewart exchanged properties with Mary Workman in 1867 as he is in Killygullib and she is in Killymuck on each others land [GVRB].  He is deleted as a Killygullib tenant in 1886 to Robert Stewart, his son.  I now believe he died about 1885.
    
    
      Boyd Gray viewed the GVRBs from Killygullib to find out
    more about Robert Stewart’s time there.  The GVRBs
    recorded that before Robert Stewart secured his land
    in 1886 it was occupied by John Stewart in 1867,
    deleted from Mary [nee Stewart] Workman.  It appears
    that Mary Workman and John Stewart swapped properties
    about 1867.  Mary’s, in lower Killygullib, being
    deleted to John Stewart and John Stewart’s, in upper
    Killymuck, being deleted to Mary Workman.  Both
    properties, though in different townlands, are very
    close together.  I do not know what the motive was for
    this swap.  Perhaps one had a better or larger house
    as both acreages are about the same.   Since the GVRBs
    pinpoint John Stewart’s death around 1886 it may be
    easier to search for his death record first and see if
    he was a widower at his death than Mary's. ---BAB----12-2005
