James Stewart

  • He is not recorded in Griffiths in 1858 and may be dead by this time although there is a James and Mrs. Stewart in the 1st Kilrea Comm Roll between 1865-1866 - labourer of Killymuck.  This is possibly the James Stewart who married Rachel Boyd of Lismoyle and, if so, he is dead in 1866.

  • 1833 Tithe Applotment Book, Tamlaght O'Crilly Parish, Killymuck:  James Stuart (No.2) is listed holding 15 acres 2 roods 10 perches (3 acres-2nd quality; 7 acres-3rd quality; 5 acres 2 roods, 10 perches-5th quality) valued at  (in pounds) 1. 3 1/2.0 tithe.
    
    1831 Census of Killymuck: James Stewart, head of house #69 with 4males and 2 females all Presbyterian.  (Robert, Samuel, John and Nancy with their parents)
    
    First Kilrea Presbyterian Church Records 1825-1932:  There are three references to James Stewart. 1) James Stewart and Betty Fulton of Killymuck are recorded as parents on daughter Nancy's marriage to William Kirkwood, January 7, 1835.  2) A  James Stewart and Mrs. Stewart are listed as members in the Communicants Roll Book, 1865-66.  James Stewart, Killymuck,labourer, is marked "dead" after the October 1866 column.  He is not recorded as taking communion in either year.  Mrs. Stewart took communion in April 1866 and is recorded as "removed" after that date.(Is this a reference to this couple or perhaps the James Stewart, son of Thomas, of Killymuck?) 3) In the list of "Seat Holders in Arrears of Stipends up to May 1838", James Stewart is recorded as owing 6 shillings.  There are no recorded baptisms of any of their children in this Church because the records don't begin until 1825.
    
    James Stewart is not listed on the General Tenement Valuation for Co. Londonderry(Griffiths) in 1858, except as the father of John Stewart indicated by "Jas" following John Stewart's name.
    
    Churchtown Presbyterian Church Records 1840-1970: No records for James and Betty Fulton Stewart.
    
    
    Notes on James Stewart and Elizabeth Fulton:
    They were members of the First Kilrea Presbyterian Church, Kilrea, Kilrea Parish, Co. Londonderry, Ireland (now N. Ireland). 1835 is the first recorded date for them in this church. The marriage record of Nancy Stewart and William Kirkwood on January 7, 1835 gives the names of Nancy's parents as James Stewart and Betty Fulton.
    [1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church has records also of the Lusk and McCaughrin families and the second marriage of John Stewart of Gortin (Sarah Jane's grandfather) to Jane Peden.  When the Churchtown Presbyterian Church was built in 1835 several of the Stewarts changed to it.  Another James Stewart recorded in the 1st Kilrea records is James Stewart/Marianne Mulligan who came from Rasharkin Congregation in 1826.]
    
    James and Elizabeth Stewart probably had a large family consisting of James Stewart, Jr., recorded living next to James Stewart and who emigrated; Samuel Stewart, who shared land and was an Elder with our ancestor, John Stewart; John Stewart, our ancestor; and Nancy Stewart, recorded as their daughter.  Other Stewart farmers in Killymuck were William Stewart and Robert Stewart whose dates fit as brothers to John Stewart.
