Hugh was born about 1824 in Gorton Coolhill, Aghadowey Parish, Co. Londonderry, Ireland. Hugh's father was John Stewart and his mother was Sarah Craig. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stewart and Unknown Irwin; his maternal grandparents were Robert? Craig and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Robert, John, William, Jane and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the seven known children. He died on May 5th, 1897 in Cobram, Victoria, Australia. His burial was on May 7th, 1897 in Cobran, Victoria, Australia.¹
