Samuel was born on December 6th, 1869 in Argrey, Co. Donegal, Ireland.  Samuel's father was William (Argrey) Smyth and his mother was Annie (Edymore 1869) Lowry.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel (Mullaghanny) Smyth and Mary; his maternal grandparents were Robert (Edymore 1858 & Cavanlee1879) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Robert, Mary and Kathleen Elizabeth Lowry.  He was the oldest of the six children.
