James was born on October 12th, 1876 in Argrey, Co. Donegal, Ireland.1   James' father was William (Argrey) Smyth and his mother was Annie (Edymore 1869) Lowry.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel (Mullaghanny) Smyth and Mary; his maternal grandparents were Robert (Edymore 1858 & Cavanlee1879) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, William, Robert, Mary and Kathleen Elizabeth Lowry.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
