Robert was born about 1828 in Drumfad, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland and his baptism took place on August 3rd, 1828 in Taughboyne Parish Church. Robert's father was Hugh (Drumfad) Lowry and his mother was Frances Boyle.  His paternal grandparents were James (Drumfad) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had four half-brothers and six half-sisters, named James, Alexander, Leighton, Hugh, Eliza Jane, Anne, Catherine, Rebecca, Margaret and Martha.
